Protein Coffee Recipe

This is a practical method rather than background reading — for how protein coffee works and what ready-made options exist, see our protein coffee guide. The core trick to a smooth result is temperature control, not a special ingredient.

Iced protein coffee (about 25g protein)

Shake one scoop (around 30g) of vanilla or chocolate protein powder with 150ml of cold milk or a milk alternative in a shaker until completely smooth, with no dry powder left at the bottom. Fill a tall glass with ice and pour the protein milk over it.

Brew a double espresso, or 100ml of strong coffee, and let it cool for a minute or two off the heat. Pour it slowly over the back of a spoon into the glass so it lands gently on the cold milk rather than plunging straight in, then stir once. The gradual, cooled contact is what keeps the drink smooth rather than gritty.

This method scales up easily: double the milk and powder for two glasses, but keep the espresso volume per glass the same so it doesn't taste watered down.

Hot version

For a hot proffee, use a casein or milk-protein blend rather than pure whey isolate, since it is far more heat-stable. Mix the scoop with a splash of cold water or milk first into a smooth paste, then whisk in hot (not boiling) coffee gradually, a little at a time.

If whey is all you have to hand, keep the coffee below a simmer and add it in stages rather than all at once — you will still get a workable, if slightly less silky, drink.

Blended and flavour variations

Blended frappe-style: add the iced version's ingredients plus half a frozen banana to a blender and blitz for 20-30 seconds for a thicker, dessert-like drink.

Salted caramel: vanilla protein, a small pinch of salt and half a teaspoon of caramel syrup, following the iced method above. Mocha: chocolate protein with a teaspoon of cocoa powder whisked into the cold milk before shaking.

Vanilla oat proffee: swap dairy milk for oat milk and use a vanilla whey or plant-protein blend; oat milk froths and blends a little differently, so shake for slightly longer to fully combine.

Getting the protein number right

The 25g figure assumes a standard 30g scoop delivering around 24g of protein plus a small amount from the milk; check your specific powder's label, as scoop sizes and protein-per-scoop both vary between brands.

If you want a lighter, lower-calorie version, swap dairy milk for water or a low-calorie milk alternative and use an isolate rather than a blend — you'll lose some creaminess but keep the protein largely the same.

Common mistakes to avoid

Pouring hot coffee straight onto powder, rather than onto pre-mixed protein milk, is the single most common cause of lumps. Shaking or blending the powder into cold liquid first is the fix, every time.

Over-sweetening is the second mistake — vanilla and chocolate powders are usually already sweetened, so taste before adding syrup rather than assuming it needs it.

Frequently asked questions

Which protein powder is best for coffee?
Casein and milk-protein blends handle heat best and give a creamier result in hot drinks. Whey isolate works well in iced or cold versions where curdling isn't a risk.
Can I make protein coffee the night before?
Yes for cold-brew based versions — mix and keep it sealed in the fridge, then shake well before drinking, as the protein and coffee will separate slightly on standing.
Can I use decaf in a protein coffee recipe?
Yes, decaf works exactly the same way in all of these methods; only the caffeine content changes, not the texture or protein content.
How many calories is a homemade protein coffee?
Typically 150 to 220 calories depending on the milk and powder used, mostly driven by the protein source rather than the coffee itself.
