Vegan high protein snacks including edamame, bean crisps and a plant protein bar

Plant proteins are catching up, though vegan snacks still tend to carry a few more calories for the same protein.

Vegan bars

Misfits Cookie Butter delivers 15g of protein in 190 calories, and Pulsin Maple and Peanut 14.1g in 240. Both use pea and rice protein blends, which together provide a full range of amino acids.

Roasted edamame and soy

Seapoint Farms Dry Roasted Edamame offers 14g of protein in 130 calories plus a good dose of fibre, and soy is a complete protein in its own right.

Roasted broad beans and chickpeas

Bada Bean Bada Boom broad bean crisps sit around 6g per serving. Lower protein, but crunchy, high in fibre and easy to eat with lunch.

Nuts and nut butters

Useful protein, but calorie-dense. Best as part of a snack rather than the whole thing.

How they compare

Dairy snacks such as skyr and Greek yogurt still win on protein per calorie. If you are vegan, the practical move is to combine: a bar or edamame for protein, fruit or vegetables for volume.
