How Much Protein Do You Actually Need in a Snack?

Snack labels shout about protein, but the number that matters is how much protein you get across the whole day, not how much is printed on one wrapper.

A simple daily target

General guidance for healthy adults sits around 0.8g of protein per kilogram of bodyweight per day, with people training regularly often aiming higher, in the region of 1.2g to 2.0g per kilogram. For a 70kg adult that is roughly 56g at the low end and up to about 140g if training hard.

What that means per snack

Spreading protein across the day is easier than loading it all into dinner. If you eat three meals and two snacks, a snack carrying 10g to 20g of protein is a sensible contribution. Bars such as the Quest Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough bar (21g) or Barebells Cookies and Cream (20g) sit at the upper end. A pot of Fage Total 0% (17.5g) or Chobani Non-Fat Plain (16g) gets you there with fewer calories.

Protein per 100 calories

The more useful comparison is protein density: how much protein you get for each 100 calories. Plain Greek yogurts and ready-to-drink shakes score very well here, because there is little sugar or fat riding along. Bars are more variable, since chocolate coatings and syrups add calories that do not add protein.

Do not chase the biggest number

A 50g protein shake is not twice as useful as a 25g one if the rest of your day is already covered. Very large single doses simply top up what your body is already getting. Pick the snack that fits your calories, your taste and your routine, and let the daily total look after itself.
